When your door has gaps, air will come in, whether the door is closed or opened. As you already know, this results in loss of heat and energy, which basically translates to high energy bills. If you are experiencing this problem, you will want to use door sweeps for exterior doors. You can actually use them in your rented apartment. The most common door sweeps for exterior doors that you will find in the market include automatic, standard, draft door weatherproofing and self-stick. Choosing the right door sweep for exterior doors can be easy only if you know the specifics of each one.

Standard

Standard door sweeps come with a weatherstripping attached to a strong aluminum carrier. The role of the weatherstripping is to seal half an inch to three quarter inch gaps. These bottom door sweeps are ideal for sweeping over hardwood floor or tile floor. They are installed by screwing them into a wooden or steel door. Most of them measure 36 inches but you can actually find ones that measure 42 inches. A standard aluminum door sweep is easy to install as it comes with nails and vinyl weatherstripping.

Automatic

If you have doors that sweep across carpets or rugs, you will want to choose automatic door sweeps. When you open the door, they rise automatically and seal drafty areas when you close the door. Screws are used to attach this door sweep to the door and seal the gap between the threshold and door bottom.

Self-stick

This door sweep is ideal for homeowners or renters who don’t want to make permanent changes to their doors. You can install them on wood and metal doors. Installation is easy and only requires you to peel off the paper and press it in place.

Draft-door weatherproofing

Just like magnetic car door protector strips, draft-door weatherproofing doesn’t require you to make permanent changes. These door sweeps are made of two foam tubes, measuring 35 inches each. You can cut the tubes to fit under smaller doors. Installation requires fitting tubes into the two sleeves and placing it under the door. You can install these door sweeps over linoleum, tile, wood, carpet or tile floors.

All the door sweeps we have highlighted here help in preventing loss of energy from your home, thus reducing the amount you spent on energy bills. It also prevents dust and dirt from entering your house. Car door protector strips also serve the same purpose.
