There are people who work as health care provider for children, elders,
and people with disabilities. Indeed, this profession is not just a work but
vocation –a life calling. We will talk about some realistic and practical
suggestions that can improve you as a Caregiver.
Build a relationship
Unlike any computer-related, real people is your job medium in this
profession. And human being is emotional people. We build trust, confidence,
and openness to people around us. So as a caregiver, your first goal is to create
friendly but professional relationship with patients. For instance, elders from
home of the aged are once father and mother. However, because of passing years,
they can show mood swings and childish behavior. So a good relationship can
give health care service an extra mile. You can be more understanding when
wronged because there is a relationship. On the other hand, there will be
communication barriers when relationship is not built. High game playing and
unhealthy working environment can drain the caregiver and patients in the long run.
Know the stuff
Read medical books, ask the medicine effects and adverse reactions, and
list the intake frequencies. It will prepare you to form a schedule and
maximize your time to attend other priorities. As a caregiver, you will be the
hands and feet of patients especially those with disability. Moreover, know the
patient’s personality type? Is he intrinsic or extrinsic? What motivates or
discourages them? As caregiver, you go beyond borders. In fact you will play
the most vital role for patients’ holistic recovery. A positive attitude is
contagious; it can brighten people’s lives. This factor is dominant in Home care services. Unlike nursing homes where
professionals attend with more formality, home service caregivers usually stay
in one home with their patients. Depending on contractors’ terms and
agreements, caregivers live in separate quarters and receive other benefits in
home stay setting.
Take day-of
Some caregivers feel guilty when taking day-off –but you don’t have to.
It is constitutionally legal and beneficial. We are in a real world dealing
with real people. So there will be exhausting times when patience couldn’t go
another mile. However, it doesn’t mean breaking out to caregiver job and leaving
the patient behind. Instead, space out. Use your day-off to enjoy recreational
activities and bond with friends. It can refresh your mind a lot better.
