Geriatrics
is a medical category that refers to old patients ranging from age 60 and
above. And just like Pediatrics, Geriatrics has special training akin to
patient’s emotional, psychological, and medical needs. First things to consider
when taking care of Senior patients is that they will have emotional lapses
because of aging, especially during antibiotic medications. Next is that they
will be psychologically unstable. Their self morale and critical thinking can
differ from differ. Some of them can encounter dementia, depression, mood
swings, and other psychological illnesses. Lastly, geriatrics will need
mobility assistance while walking or standing up. Some are bound to wheelchairs
while others are completely bedridden. But why do we introduce these facts?
Well, we will talk about lengthening your patience so having a good rationale
will help you adjust better.
Exercising deep breathing
During
though times, deep breathing helps a lot. In fact, anger management teaching
supports this intervention. Retirement Home Residents can become so childish
that they will push even the most illogical arguments to get what they want. It
happens mostly in food restrictions. For instance, diabetic patients can persuasive
ask for ice cream and soft drinks, doing everything to bargain with you. As
caregiver, it can drain you out. But during this time, take a deep breath and
go out of the room for awhile. It will help you relax and regain composure.
Write journals
At the end
of the day, everyone fights hard battles. However, as caregiver you are trained
to portray positive atmosphere during administration. However, do the
expectations go with reality? No. Sometimes you are weak too. But this
emotional turbulence doesn’t have to affect professional life. So the best way
to cool down is to write all bottled emotions locked up inside. There is
something about reading your own thoughts in a paper that enables you to make a
good sense out of it. This simple exercise will help you become more patient,
especially in a Home care services environment.
Join Support Groups
Join a
Christian Community or other preferred group you want that functions as support
group. It will dramatically maximize your understanding and morale a health
care provider. Support Groups are important for caregivers and for everyone
else because they can hold you up when the battle goes extreme.
